Finding My Flow: Life as Bones

Finding My Flow: Life as Bones

I’ve never been one for neat labels, but if I had to choose a handful that come closest, they’d be these: artist, writer, adventurer, father, outdoorsman, and scout leader. They’re the threads that weave together the life I’ve built here in Surrey — a life spent chasing light, stories, and the next reason to step outside.

Why Bones?  Because I’ve always felt more alive when I’m moving, exploring, creating — like motion and imagination are the flesh I need to coat my skeleton. When I sit still, i am just a collection of old bones.  Or maybe it’s because I’ve never been afraid to strip life down to its essentials: connection, curiosity, and the courage to try something new.

I’m a loyal husband and a father to two brilliant, chaotic, endlessly surprising boys who remind me daily what adventure really looks like. They’re growing fast, learning faster, and teaching me even faster than that. Being their dad is the most humbling and exhilarating expedition I’ve ever signed up for — no map included, no compass needed, just heart.

As an artist and writer, I’m always looking for the story beneath the surface, the colour hidden in the shadows, the idea waiting quietly to be noticed. Creativity for me isn’t optional; it’s the air I breathe. Whether I’m sketching beside a river, jotting down ideas in the middle of a hike, or sitting by a campfire with the Scouts telling tales bigger than the flames, I’m most myself when I’m making something.

And if you’re looking for me, chances are I’m somewhere near water. A riverbank, a lakeside trail, a coastal path — doesn’t matter. Water calms me, recharges me, and reminds me that even the strongest forces move with fluidity and grace. I think we’re meant to do the same.

I’m nearly 50 now — which still feels odd to say — but I’ve refused to let the number define my limits. Age is a mile marker, not a finish line. If anything, it’s motivation: proof that there’s still time to push harder, wander farther, and live with intention. You don’t stop adventuring because you get older; you get older because you stop adventuring. And I’m nowhere near done.

So here I am: Bones. Artist. Writer. Adventurer. Dad. Scout leader. A man who still believes the world is wide and wild enough to surprise the longest in tooth, and I plan to keep exploring every corner I can reach — one trail, one mountain, one river and one forest at a time.  Each one lives in my head as a sketch or a story until I find the time to let it flow out.

So welcome; I am happy you found me.

And who is Bull?  Well, if you’re on your own journey, I hope you’ll keep going. The best views always show up right after the moment you thought about turning back, but didn't.  That is what Bull is; the wonders of the world waiting for you to find it, testing if you have the grit to go just one more step.
