Grit Over Gloss: A Manifesto

Grit Over Gloss: A Manifesto

Getting outside isn’t an attempt to escape the pressures of life; life follows us out there anyway. In life, as in adventure seeking, plans are made, the Bull laughs, and everything falls apart.

Maybe we are lucky and this is just a bent peg, a snapped lace, a broken flask or a torn tarp. In the rest of life, this could be sudden financial strain, the loss of a loved one, or the decline in our love for ourselves.

Something is always breaking, but that is not failure.

It is the arrangement we have with the Bull. It is the price the World applies for us to live with ambition, to brave love, or simply to care.

I envisage Bones & the Bull existing for the moments when the map becomes gibberish and the tools we carry are useless. I want it to represent the memories made despite the Bull charging through our plans.

I see it as the recognition that when all has gone heels up—when the coffee is cold, the ground is hard, and the day demands more than you packed—we still grin into the rain and take another step.

The outdoors isn’t a cure; it’s a conversation. Sometimes it answers with silence, sometimes with chaos, and sometimes with pure, golden, miracle moments.

I want to bring to the brand the value I see in grit over gloss. I want to celebrate the stories over slogans and scars over aesthetics.

I often laugh, not because it’s easy, but because it’s better than quitting. Living seems sometimes harder than dying, but we carry on, not because we’re fearless, but because stopping costs more. We are temporary and the world doesn’t care. Knowing this keeps me honest.

I want Bones and the Bull to be a nod to the cold mornings I still remember (and will never forget). It should be for the trips that went wrong but stayed with me (Type 2 fun) and to recognize that doing it badly is still doing it.

When I look for perfection, I am often lost, but when I search for meaning the boundaries vanish.

So, if anything in this manifesto resonates with you, pull up a chair. Warm your Bones by our fire and let’s together laugh at the undeniable, unstoppable nature of the Bull.

-Bones
